The Compadecida

In George Jonas’ film, the Compadecida – the Virgin Mary, who forgives the sinners with a sweet smile, is seen as a young, delicate girl. For this saint, played by Regina Duarte, Brennand created a costume with three elements: a yellow vestment, like that of her son Jesus, with sky-blue details; the virginal white mantle, embroidered with Brazilian flowers and fruit, and with a red lining that is the color of love; and, finally, the veil that covers her divine head, with a brilliant sun embroidered on blue.
