Today and Always

In 1995, at the invitation of Governor Miguel Arraes, Ariano Suassuna once again assumed the Secretariat of Culture of Pernambuco, initiating the third phase of the Movimento Armorial, that would be called the Arraial phase, after the inauguration of the Teatro Arraial, whose name is a tribute to Canudos. This is the period of the Performance-Lessons, that contain explanations regarding Brazilian popular and erudite culture, and the exhibition of musical and dance numbers or images linked to architecture, sculpture, painting etc. During this period, Ariano had abundant contact with Romero de Andrade Lima, Maria Paula Costa Rêgo, Alexandre Nóbrega and his son, Manuel Dantas Suassuna. Presentations of his plays adapted for television and cinema also took place, with extraordinary success. Although the Armorial no longer exists today as a movement, its esthetics still echo, rendering fruit that can be seen in contemporary art as well as in theater, dance, cinema and television, through authors like João Falcão, directors Guel Arraes and Luiz Fernando Carvalho, and actors such as Antonio Nóbrega.
